Armed police have stormed a Leicester street to arrest a suspect after a fellow cop was “deliberately” mown down this morning. Emerging footage shows the masked officers surrounding a house in Leicester before a man slowly walks towards them with his arms up.
The suspect was one of three people arrested after a constable was left with serious head injuries in the alleged hit-and-run at around 3:30am.
The officer had been left bleeding and “screaming in pain” on the street.
It was just yards from the quiet street where two of the three suspects were later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer.
Police said three men are now in custody over the hit-and-run incident. The officer was left with serious head injuries after being hit by a white Mercedes as he tried to stop it in the early hours of Friday morning.
One eyewitness to the attack said:
I could see someone lying on the ground screaming out in real pain. Police told me to go indoors after asking me who lived where.
A few hours later they came back, there must have been 20 armed cops, masked and helmeted, and they arrested three of my next door neighbours.
I was shocked because they’re a really nice family and not any trouble makers.
They came out one by one, first the two young men who were handcuffed but not resisting and then the woman, their sister, and they were whisked away. We heard a policeman had been run over as he got out of his car to question a suspect about an attack earlier. He was badly injured. It’s very evil.”
Iqbal Valli, a committee member at the All-Masjid & Madrasah Al-Furqan mosque said the suspects were regular worshippers:
“There was a huge armed police and they blocked off the road as they made arrests. They had guns pointing at the suspects as they led them from the house and their parents are devastated.
No one really knows what’s going on.The family are decent people, they are Muslims, and they worship at our mosque. Everyone here is shocked, it’s a very peaceful area.”
Deputy Chief Constable Rob Nixon said:
This series of incidents have left one of our officers seriously injured and a man hurt in an assault.
The enquiries are in early stages as officers work to piece together the full circumstances.
The injuries caused to our officer are unacceptable and will not be tolerated. We urge anyone who has any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to make contact.
