Juncker and Barnier SLAM deal-door SHUT in Theresa May’s face!

Unelected EU Commission President Jean Claude Juncker has today insisted Brussels will not permit Theresa May to re-open talks on the withdrawal agreement and the Irish backstop to prevent a hard border in Ireland. He confirmed that the initial agreement is the “only deal and the best deal possible” as the EU doubles down on their stance.

Juncker was joined today by the EU’s Chief negotiator Michel Barnier where Juncker then launched an assault on British democracy as he pulled the ladder up to actually concluding a Brexit deal in order to avoid a hard divorce.

Juncker thundered: “The agreement remains the best and only deal possible. The EU said so in November, we said so in December, we said so after the first meaningful vote in January.”

Juncker insisted he would keep in close contact with Mrs May in order to work towards finding a backstop compromise.

We need a safety net. We have no desire or incentive to use the safety net but at the same time no safety net can ever be truly safe if it can just be removed at any time. The impression some in UK hope the other 26 will abandon the backstop and Ireland, but this is not a game.

It goes to the heart of what being a member of the EU means. Ireland’s border is Europe’s border and it’s our union’s priority.

From the comments on social media amongst Brexit backers it appears there is deep frustration with many arguing that the only way for Brexit to be fully achieved is with a WTO clean break.
