When passengers board an aeroplane it would be bizarre for the pilot to be scared of turbulence. The pilot often excels and knuckles down when turbulence occurs. Many Brexiteers will be hoping this analogy is accurate to Boris Johnson at the present moment. It would be naïve to suggest that Boris Johnson has had an easy week, in fact, some have suggested that this week has been as tricky a week as a PM has had to endure in recent memory. Mr Johnson has lost every single vote in the Commons and now leads a minority government.
Boris Johnson has inherited a hugely remain Parliament as well as an extremely frosty mainstream media, who seem content revelling in the chaos that has occurred this week. Yesterday Mr Johnson held a press conference at a police recruitment centre in Wakefield. At this event, one reporter asked the PM if he would become the next member of the Johnson family to resign. Some are writing Mr Johnson off already. This would be highly foolish. Many voters outside of the Westminster bubble are impressed that he’s brave enough to take a hard line and is looking to deliver a meaningful Brexit in spite of the behaviour of the establishment.
The Telegraph reported on Thursday that a Downing Street source said on that the PM was “bizarrely buoyed” by the bruising events of the previous day. Jeremy Corbyn and Labour have finally been unmasked. Labour doesn’t want Brexit to happen. The source went in to say “he’s going to ride it out. It’s a case of what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”. The pilot is guiding his plane.
Less than 6 weeks ago 60 per cent of Conservative members voted for Boris Johnson because he is different, he was a far fetch from the previous ‘Maybot’. Many of the 17.4 million are not impressed with this week’s grotesque Westminster pantomime and are delighted that Boris is actually looking to deliver his promise to leave on 31st October. Many were previously cynical and fed up but have now become angry. They can see Mr Johnson sanctioning 20,000 new police officers as well as £1.8bn for 20 NHS hospital upgrades.
The mainstream media have been rammed all week saying that the Conservative party is becoming somewhat of a narrow sect, this is despite the expelled MP’s voting against a British government and effectively handing powers to a foreign power. Many of the wider public feel that Boris gets it and the Conservative voters get it again, after the disaster of Theresa May.
It has been clear to all observers that Jo Johnson’s decision yesterday hurt the Prime Minister, but he soldiered on. Dilyn, the Welsh rescue puppy, and the new Downing street pet may have lifted the mood in Downing Street this week. Boris Johnson is ready in his speech yesterday he stated he would “rather die in a ditch” than ask for a further Brexit delay. Millions of first-time voters in 2016, who thought their vote was going to court for very little have renewed hope. The turbulence is expected for the time of year, however the Prime Minister has put on the seatbelt sign and is riding towards the landing.
