Friday the 20th September 2019 sees The Global Climate Strike. My name is Oliver Down and I am UNN’s current affairs correspondent and spent the afternoon speaking with some of the climate change activists. I was greeted by around 200 people in the centre of Leicester at Jubilee Square.
The prior mainstream media narrative spoke of the event being run by school-age children. However, upon arrival, I engaged in extensive dialogue with a gentleman with grey hair. This gentleman was relaxed about the problem and put forward coherent points. However, the second gent I spoke, who I later identified as being called Corey was far more partisan. Corey held a placard which read ‘Burn Capitalism Not the Planet’. This placard was created by the Socialist Alternative party. Corey, who was at an event supposedly for children, had a cigarette poking out of his hat. Corey was extremely nervous, to begin with, however, he eventually got going.
The man spoke of a split within the Socialist party only last week, which explained his Socialist Alternative banner. When asked as to whether this event was more radical than previous climate change events the Corey replied: “it would appear it is pushing that way yes”. Following this exchange, this man was far from happy that he is only aloud “on the fringes”. This is as a result of him being from a hard-left organisation and there were a small number of school-age children around.
Corey was clearly frustrated at not being allowed into the event itself went on to slam organisers of the event further. Corey mentioned sectarianism within the movement and when asked directly if he felt there was sectarianism present at the event, he replied: “a little bit yes”. It would appear he felt these feelings were as a result of organisers not wanting this hard-left movement hijacking an event for schoolchildren. I have made contact with the Socialist Alternative Party and spoke with a Lady called Amanda to ask for further comments from Corey and she assures me that he will be making further contact this afternoon to clarify his position further.
