Jeremy Corbyn has once again praised an entity that he has previously been fiercely opposed to. This time Mr Corbyn used his response to the Queen’s Speech in the House of Commons today to advocate for European Arrest Warrant (EAW) he has previously lambasted particularly when it was used against Julian Assange. Mr Corbyn claimed that the European Arrest Warrant, which requires EU member states to hand over suspects wanted in other EU member-states with little need for them to prove to domestic courts that there is a satisfactory case against them would be an important tool for protecting public safety post Brexit.
However, Mr Corbyn who has been a lifelong Eurosceptic as well as opposing every European treaty that was an increase in the bloc’s powers during his time as a backbencher appears to have been far less supportive of the European Arrest Warrant before he became Labour leader. Mr Corbyn told the House of Commons in 2013 that : “[L]et me briefly quote Debra Sheehan, who has been campaigning for Mr Assange not to be extradited to Sweden: ‘I believe this ruling’ — the ruling that [Assange] can be extradited — ‘sets a very dangerous precedent allowing any UK citizen — and possibly any European citizen — to be extradited without charge. Mr Assange’s case shows that the European arrest warrant can be used in a totally disproportionate way…’”
In spite of these previous comments, Mr Corbyn told the Commons today “the dog-whistle rhetoric around foreign offenders, Mr Speaker is a rather ugly mask for the fact that by crashing out of the EU this Government risks losing some of the most effective measures in tackling cross-border crime. The European Arrest Warrant, participation in Eurojust and access to numerous databases.” Some may argue that these comments mirror Mr Corbyn and the Labour party’s stance on Brexit, somewhat of a flip flop.
At what time and for what reason Mr Corbyn now favours the EAW is unclear. However, some argue that the EAW but in any event the EU’s is certainly controversial. However, some state that the EAW has been exploited by many more criminal migrants from the EU than have ever been surrendered to the British authorities under its supposedly all-important arrest warrants. In addition to this in many cases the EU and its rules have also prevented the deportation of EU criminals once convicted or detected.
