As part of this pledge UNN’s Oliver Down attended an event with two former Congressman to discuss the 2020 Presidential election. Oliver Down was in the audience and putting the questions to Nick Rayshaw the Democrat Congressman between 1977-2015 representing West Virginia and Luke Messer the Republican Congressman for Indiana from 2013 till earlier this year.
The first issue on the agenda was the ongoing rumoured impeachment process of the President. Ironically Mr Rayshaw was the first to ridicule these proceedings when he described a “left crowd that wanted him impeached from day 1”. Although Mr Rayhsaw did state that he feels that the official impeachment process will begin soon. Mr Messer, who preceded the current Vice President Mike Pence, drew comparisons between the impeachment of Donald Trump and Brexit when he stated, “if you take away the peoples vote who voted for him, they will be very angry”.
Talk then turned to talk of the 2020 Presidential election. Mr Messer pulled no punches when he stated, “he’s probably going to win”. Mr Rayshaw didn’t disagree although he did add the “only thing predictable is the unpredictable”. Joe Biden was picked out by both men as the Democrat’s most likely candidate to defeat Trump in 2020. Many may strike comparisons between Britain and America when distrust of the establishment is discussed. Mr Messer stated, “if you are part of the establishment people don’t like it” and he sought Hilary Clinton as exhibit A.
Following this, having universally agreed that Mr Trump would win in 2020 the agenda moved towards discussion of why Mr Trump has done so well. Mr Messer stated “people feel they have been let down” by the establishment. Messer, when asked if Mr Trump was a political anomaly, he dismissed this adding there is “sincere hatred for the status quo in both parties”. Many will cite parallels in British politics with current American politics.
