Canadian retaliatory tariffs are now in effect officially kicking off a trade war. It comes after the Trump administration put tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium. 40 workers are due to lose their jobs in Canada as a direct result of the tariffs according to CBS’s Meghan Roberts.

Its a change of tone from: “We will not escalate — and we will not back down,” Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said on Friday.

On Sunday, the day the country Canada had its national holiday, they imposed a 25% tariff on assorted US metals products, tariffs of 10% have also been imposed on over 250 other US goods like beer kegs, whiskey and orange juice, chocolate, bourbon.

The tit-for-tat duties are estimated to total C$16.6bn (£9.5bn), representing the 2017 value of Canadian metals exports affected by the US measures but the US could impose more Tariffs at any time and further escalate the standoff.

The Canadian administration is trying to exert maximum political pressure on the Trump Administration but President Donald J. Trump is known for a lot of things and standing down is not one of them. Ottawa would be foolish not to expect further retaliatory measures as Canada’s Tariffs start to dig deep into the Republican heartlands.

Ottawa has directly chosen specific items that are made and produced in Republican states to try and exercise the most vicious political pressure and hurt the Trump administration n his core support base. Red states will be hit the hardest by the Tariffs and Trudeau is hoping republic senators will feel the pressure from constituents, forcing them to bring issues up with the President.
