In 2014, the BBC suddenly objected to the most popular and largest of the British ‘Fawlty Towers’ tribute Acts, performed by Laughlines. When Laughlines informed Lord Hall (BBC Director General) that this would have a detrimental commercial impact on its British performer’s tribute and be advantageous to the Australian performer and her ‘Fawlty Towers’ tribute show, the BBC would not comment.
When confronted with information about the BBC’s earlier knowledge of the British performer and his ‘Fawlty Towers’ Tribute Act, the BBC denied all knowledge. The BBC now claims it cannot find its correspondence with the British performer, which is about his British ‘Fawlty Towers’ tribute. The BBC has previously informed Laughlines its earliest correspondence with them about the British performer’s tribute was in 2014, which is untrue. The BBC have not asked Laughlines for copies of the earlier correspondence from 2004 and now state the matter is closed.
Since the BBC ‘singled out’ the leading British tribute act both Ofcom and the BBC have remained silent and will not respond to questions about the BBC’s earlier knowledge.
The British act had made clear to the BBC in 2004, that none of the television series copyright was to be used in the tribute. In 2014, the BBC circulated disinformation about the Laughlines shows written by its performer, which has also been circulated to venues. The BBC is aware of this and is covering up the name of the person responsible for circulating the disinformation and the BBC have not apologised.
Since moving over, in 2014, from the BBC’s IP department to BBC commercial, Diane Hamer, a former lawyer in Australia, has been responsible for the BBC’s ‘Fawlty Towers’ brand protection. The BBC does not deny its commercial arm supplies ‘Fawlty Towers’ merchandise for the Australian performer’s show, which operates in the London West End.
The BBC has responded to inquiries to Lord Hall (Director General) by post without any name, title, or department, so that BBC employees responsible cannot be named and held accountable.
