Extraordinary news is coming out of Argentina which suggests that Argentina has revealed a plot to seize back control of the Falkland Islands from the UK. The president of the country has is making a plea to help heal the “bleeding wound”. President Alberto Fernandez has also issued a threat to fishermen. He has warned that his administration would lay down sanctions on fishing companies operating around the Falkland Island’ seas.
The Argentinian leader unmasked his plot to wrestle back control of the Falkland Islands with three bills focussed on strengthening the territorial sovereignty of Argentina. Mr Fernandez spoke at the opening of the 138th congressional session and said: “Our common home has a bleeding wound in the deepest of our sovereignty feeling, the usurpation of the Malvinas [Falkland Islands], South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands”.
The first bill involves the introduction of the National Council of Affairs, this will look to enforce medium- and long-term State policies on the issue of sovereignty. The second bill concerns a Buenos Aires’ plan to seize control of the island’s seas, and states that this “will contribute to consolidate sovereignty rights over resources on the seabed and subsurface”. The third bill refers to a change in the Federal Fisheries Scheme. This will look to apply stricter sanctions on vessels that are “illegally fishing in those spaces under Argentine jurisdiction or in waters over which Argentina has sovereignty jurisdiction”.
On top of the war in 1982, which was won comprehensively by the British in 2013 a referendum was conducted which asked the Falkland islanders whether they supported the continuation of their status as an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom. This question prompted an almost unanimous response from the island’s inhabitants. On a turnout of 92 per cent, an overwhelming 99.8 per cent voted to remain a British territory, with only three votes against. If only mainland British democracy was that decisive.
