Reports are emerging that suggest that Nigel Farage is set to create a new party, as a means of beginning new projects. Following two decades of anti-EU campaigning, on the 31st of January, many felt that Mr Farage’s political work had culminated. The Brexit Party leader and former leader of UKIP has been an active Eurosceptic since the Maastricht Treaty in the Nineties and went on to win the 2014 and 2019 European parliamentary elections.
Mr Farage confirmed last week that he is not giving up on politics yet, whilst speaking at Liberty University in Virginia in early February, Mr Farage said: “I haven’t finished with just getting the United Kingdom out of the European Union; I won’t settle until I get the whole of Europe out of the European Union”. However, according to Lord David Owen, the current Brexit Party leader has not finished his work in British politics and will embark on a new British crusade before attempting to take down the EU.
The former Foreign Secretary and SDP Lord David Owen stated “Mark my words Nigel Farage has a proven record of getting shifts of opinion in this country. And now, he has singled out reforming the House of Lords. He is going to launch some new party. He has chosen proportional representation and House of Lords. He will lead with the House of Lords, though. It won’t be very hard to pull out.” It is unclear as to how Lord Owen knows of Mr Farage’s future plans but when Mr Farage launched his general election campaign in November, he announced that on top of Brexit, his party would have also pushed for voting reform, the abolition of the House of Lords in favour of an elected second chamber, and the creation of a written constitution.
It may appear that Lord Owen may be on to something. Since its creation in 1801 many Prime Ministers have attempted to reform the House of Lords. Polling on the House of Lords suggests that there is a public appetite for at least some level of reform for the House of Lords.
