The Islamic State terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack on Sikh temple in Kabul city which left a number of people dead or wounded.
The terror group issued a statement confirming that the assailants of the group carried out the attack against the Sikh temple in Kabul city.
Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid in a statement said the Islamic Emirate has no link with the attack in Shor Bazar area of Kabul.
Gunmen stormed a Sikh religious gathering in the Afghan capital Kabul on Wednesday.
As per reports, around 150 people were worshipping in the Gurudwara at the time of the attack, which killed at least 11 worshippers and wounded as many.
Interior Ministry spokesman Tariq Arian told journalists that police responded quickly and killed all the attackers.
“Unfortunately there are casualties,” he said. At least 25 people are thought to have been killed, including a child.
Sikhs are a small religious minority in Afghanistan. They have often been the target of attacks by Islamic extremists in the past. The Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for the latest incident.
Narender Singh Khalsa, a lawmaker who represents the Sikh community, said “three suicide bombers entered the temple at a time when it was full of worshippers.”
The Afghan police engaged in a standoff with unidentified attackers at a Sikh religious complex in the capital Kabul.
In response India has condemned the attack, India’s External Affairs Ministry conveyed its sincerest condolences to the immediate family members of the deceased and wished speedy recovery to the injured.
“India stands ready to extend all possible assistance to the affected families of the Hindu and Sikh community of Afghanistan,” it said.
“Such cowardly attacks on the places of religious worship of the minority community, especially at this time of COVID-19 pandemic, is reflective of the diabolical mindset of the perpetrators and their backers,” the MEA said.
British soldiers have been deployed alongside a NATO-led Resolute Support Mission forces in the city to help fend off any potential attacks and secure the area.
