News emerged last night as UNN was LIVE on our Sunday show that Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been taken to hospital for tests as his coronavirus symptoms have not yet faded.
Mr Johnson continues to lead the Government after spending the night in hospital, his cabinet colleagues have said.
Robert Jenrick, the Housing and Communities Secretary, insisted that the Prime Minister “will continue to be kept informed as to what’s happening and to be in charge of the Government” from his hospital bed.
Mr Jenrick’s statement was echoed by Sir Iain Duncan Smith who said Mr Johnson remained “clear headed” and would be able to continue running the country, with extra demands falling “on the shoulders” of his cabinet.
Mr Jenrick was unable to say when Mr Johnson would leave hospital and whether he would have to spend another night there, however, he did say: “I expect he will be back at No 10 shortly.”
He also stated: “He has worked phenomenally hard, as have many people across the country.
“I know for him personally it will be very frustrating that he has had to go to hospital.”
The former leader of the Conservative Party said that regardless of Mr Johnson being taken to hospital, he will continue to stay informed and remain engaged in all decision making.
Speaking to the BBC’s Today programme Sir Iain said: “It doesn’t mean to say the Prime Minister isn’t engaged and shouldn’t be engaged in all decision making,
“He, as I understand it, remains clear headed and able to contemplate all sorts of issues and problems but obviously the functioning day to day with the extra demands, that will fall on the shoulders of others while they now try and get him better.”
Last night Downing Street said the Prime Minister only had mild symptoms and insisted he would be able to continue with his duties.
