Man detained in Turkey for hanging Union Flag towel from building

A man has been detained in Turkey for hanging a towel emblazoned with the Union flag from a building in Turkey, officials in the country said.

The Iranian national was detained in the city of Kayseri after displaying the UK flag on a public holiday.

Neighbours had complained about the hanging of the towel claiming that it was a provocative act.

The man has defended himself by saying he was merely drying his wet towel, the Kayseri governor’s office said in a statement.

Turks celebrate Youth and Sports Day by displaying their country’s flag out of windows

One of the ways in which Turks celebrate Youth and Sports Day on 19 May is by displaying their country’s flag from windows and on balconies, the holiday commemorates the start of Turkey’s War of Independence on 19 May 1919 against forces in the country, including from Britain, after the First World War.

Media reports claimed that neighbours clapped and cheered as police escorted away the detained man.
