Quarantining those entering from airports unlikely to happen until UK cases are low

On the 10th of May, as part of his address to the nation, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a quarantine for anyone entering the UK. Since this announcement, UNN has brought you several pieces regarding this with one stating that this quarantine would not include French citizens. 

French citizens will not face immediate quarantine upon arrival in UK

Although a number 10 spokesperson last week maintained:“There isn’t a French exemption. What the statement at the weekend said was they were quoting measures applied to France [at that stage], and that was a joint statement between ourselves and the French.”

Many had their doubts at the time as to if this quarantine would ever be brought into force. This morning the member of the SAGE committee Professor John Edmunds, has poured cold water on the idea ever happening. Professor Edmunds has said “quarantining people coming into the country really matters when, or if, we get our incidents very low”. 

Some may question the logic in placing British citizens virtual under house arrest without testing or quarantining arrivals into Britain. 

Professor Edmunds also said: “our incidents are actually still quite high and so people coming into the country are unlikely to cause much of a problem at the moment”. 

UNN’s Oliver Down understands that there is currently a plan to ask UK arrivals to undertake a 14-day self-isolation period, with spot-checking being undertaken on some to check that they are complying. However, Oliver Down has this morning learnt that the Home Secretary is planning a £1,000 fine for non-compliance with more details announced at today’s 5pm press briefing, which she will personally chair.
