The Plaid Cymru MP Jonathan Edwards has had the party whip withdrawn. Mr Edwards was arrested on Wednesday and is currently said to be “complying fully with the police inquiries”. The 44-year-old is the elected MP for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr and has been since the general election of 2010. The MP was arrested on suspicion of assault.
A Plaid Cymru spokesperson has released a statement in response to the news which said: “On May 20th, Jonathan Edwards MP was arrested following a report of an incident. The party whip has been withdrawn pending the conclusion of a police investigation”.
The withdrawal of the whip means he has been suspended from the party without losing his seat. He now becomes an independent until the party decides to restore the whip.
Mr Edwards has been a vocal remain voice and has on many occasions voiced concerns on Brexit and its effects on Wales. Mr Edwards has also called for an independent Wales outside the UK.
Plaid Cymru’s statement went on to say: “Mr Edwards has accepted this course of action and is complying fully with the police inquires. It would be inappropriate for the party to comment further at this time”.
