The BBC newsreader Simon McCoy has accused his BBC colleague Gary Lineker of ‘abusing his position’ after the Match of the Day and former professional footballer accused Boris Johnson of lying.
The news anchor on BBC News slammed the sports pundit after Lineker took to Twitter to sound off about Boris Johnson, during last nights coronavirus briefing. The Prime Minister last night announced he would be standing by his top advisor Dominic Cummings. This comes as a result of allegations that Mr Cummings broke lockdown rules three times.
Whilst PM Johnson was taking the daily briefing, Gary Lineker tweeted: “Please. Stop. Lying”. This Tweet gained a huge amount of attention on social media. Simon McCoy got involved in the row when he suggested that sharing his opinion on social media undermined BBC impartiality rules.
Mr McCoy said : “Please. Stop. If you speak for yourself – write a letter”. Mr McCoy went on to say “but if you are speaking with your BBC hat on – you are abusing a position which puts BBC journalists in an impossible position”.
This was not the end of the story as Gary Lineker refused to back down and said “Check the rules. That only applies to those who work in news or current affairs. I speak for me. No one else. Good day”.
The Match of the Day host is extremely vocal on social media regarding political issues and had previously offered to stand in as temporary PM. Mr Lineker said: “As your new PM @10DowningStreet I shall revoke article 50 and stop Brexit (it was crooked, built on lies and only an advisory referendum anyway). The billions saved will go to the NHS and Education. Thank you for your confidence”.
Mr Lineker had vowed to stop Tweeting about politics. It would appear he just couldn’t resist on this issue.
