Amongst a weekend of worldwide protests a large demonstration took to the streets of Milan and Rome on Saturday and demanded the immediate resignation of the Government as well as an ‘ITALEXIT’ from the eurozone. Italian businesses have only recently been allowed to reopen after a two-month nationwide lockdown in an attempt to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
Hundreds attended the demonstrations to demand an immediate end to the restrictions. Numerous anti-lockdown groups were present and those present were also demanding the removal of the Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte which would force a new election.
Banners present called for a “return to the Italian lira” – which was Italy’s currency prior to the introduction of the euro. It is understood that protesters chanted anti-EU slogans, including “Stop Euro” and “Italexit”.
In Milan the protest was led by the a so called ‘Orange Vest movement’. One of the founders and the former Carabinieri General Antonio Pappalardo addressed the crowd and said : “The Italian people are not afraid. The Italian people have the desire to redeem themselves. This is the end of this government of arrogant people. The end of this government”.
A regional coordinator of the protests, Renato Calcari, has said: “We ask for the end of the Conte government, the election of a new Parliament and a new head of state, and to end the ongoing health dictatorship. “We also ask for the introduction of a currency, called the new Italic lira so we are able to support Italian families and businesses”.
It is reported today in the Express that, at the protest in Rome, dozens of protesters clashed with riot police who in turned used pepper spray on protestors.
