US Department of Justice submits formal request to question Prince Andrew over Epstein

The Prince Andrew- Jeffery Epstein affair made a further dramatic twist last night after the US Department of Justice (DOJ) submitted a formal request for Prince Andrew to be questioned over the goings-on with Jeffery Epstein. 

The US DOJ filed what is known as a ‘mutual legal assistance’  request to the UK Home Office. These requests are submitted in criminal cases under a legal treaty between the UK and US. Prince Andrew has always stringently denied any wrongdoing in his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. However, this request submitted by the DOJ means that Prince Andrew could be forced to appear in a UK court as a witness in the case within months.

Towards the end of 2019 US officials claimed that Prince Andrew had refused to co-operate with their requests to be questioned over Epstein. Submitting an MLA is being perceived by many as an audacious move to try to force him to answer questions.

It is reported in this morning’s Mail that  Prince Andrew’ legal team are extremely frustrated with these latest developments as they believe they have complied in every possible way. The source in this mornings Mail has said: “Legal discussions with the Department of Justice are subject to strict confidentiality rules, as set out in their own guidelines. We have chosen to abide by both the letter and the spirit of these rules, which is why we have made no comment about anything related to the Department of Justice during the course of this year. We believe in playing a straight bat”.

However, it is understood that the Prince has yet to speak to US prosecutors despite stating in his infamous Newsnight interview in November last year that he would co-operate imminently.
