António Guterres is the 9th Secretary-General of the United Nations, who took office on 1st January 2017 – yet how many of us have even heard of him?
At a recent press conference, Guterres called for a multilateral level of governance with the teeth to function as an instrument of global governance.
He stated in the interdependent world of today national interests are not easily separated from the global good. We must reimagine the way nations cooperate.
The economic and social upheaval caused by the Coronavirus pandemic has laid bare severe and systemic inequalities across the world and underscored its fragility in the face of climate crisis, the threat of nuclear war and lawlessness in cyberspace he warned.
We need a network bringing together the UN system, regional organizations, international financial institutions among others. Civil society, cities, the private sector and young people are essential voices in shaping the world.
To the globe’s “fragilities” he added there is a widespread and increasing distrust of national governments, “inequality, discrimination, corruption and lack of opportunities all over the world – grievances that still need to be addressed, including with a renewed social contract.
He warned there is also the possibility of another pandemic “a new virus transmitted as easily as COVID-19 but as deadly as Ebola”. And there is also “the plague of misinformation” to be fought.

Guterres stated there is a lot of talk about the need for a “new normal” after this crisis. The world of work cannot and should not look the same after this crisis.
It is time for a coordinated global, regional and national effort to create decent work for all as the foundation of a green, inclusive and resilient recovery. For example, a shift of taxation from payroll to carbon could help to go a long way in this direction.
With smart and timely action at all levels, and with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as our guide, we can emerge from this crisis stronger, with better jobs and a brighter, more equal and greener future for all.
Guterres stated he is looking forward to discussing these matters at the UN’s annual general assembly in September.
This is not the first time Guterres – former president of the Socialist International from 1999 to 2005, has used the coronavirus pandemic to push “global governance” in one form or another.
In March he proposed that 10% of the world’s GDP be put into an internationally administered fund and “coordinated stimulus package” to respond to economic and social fallout from the pandemic.
“If countries were to accept the plan, the United Nations or some similar coordinating agency would be given the equivalent of approximately US$8.7 trillion, that would be 2,900 times greater than the UN’s current annual budget of US$3 billion.
What is the United Nations
The United Nations is a very powerful organisation it sits at the very top of the global power structure yet how many of us know what it does or how much of our domestic policy flows from it?
The United Nations was founded in 1945 made up of 193 member states it acts as an intergovernmental organisation. The UN Charter of 1945 is the Treaty of the UN and all members (including Britain) are bound by its articles.
It has six principal organs: the General Assembly; the Economic and Social Council; the Trusteeship Council; the International Court of Justice; the UN Secretariat and the Security Council. The UN System also includes a multitude of specialised agencies, such as the World Bank Group, the World Health Organisation, the World Food Programme, UNESCO, and UNICEF. Also working in tandem with many civil society organisations and foundations.
Analysis
António Guterres stated “with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as our guide, we can emerge from this “crisis” stronger” Interesting given that UN Agenda 2030 has historically been branded a conspiracy theory.
I cannot help but notice a recurring theme emerging – with every “crisis” be it “climate change” be it “Covid 19” the result is always the same a political demand for more “global governance” followed swiftly by billions if not trillons of pounds flowing from national governments into global banks and Institutions such as the UN, EU and WHO.
If I were a conspiracy theorist I might just believe these crises were “created” to justify their existence and increase their financial and power structures.
Problem – reaction – solution – but that would just be crazy – would it not?
