Calls have emerged for ‘Rule, Britannia!’ as well as ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ to be barred from the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms concert because the lyrics are are “crudely jingoistic”.
One person that is leading the calls is Richard Morrison who studied music at Cambridge University as well as being a BBC Young Musician of the Year judge. Mr Morrison used his column in the BBC Music Magazine to state that, in his opinion it would be “insensitive, bordering on incendiary” to have the songs at this years concert due to the background of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Mr Morrison went on to say that the popular and patriotic songs were only appropriate for a “toe-curling embarrassing anachronistic farrago”. In Mr Morrison’s opinion they should be to replaced with other songs that do not “provoke offence or ridicule”.
This article has been widely criticised by some, such as the Conservative Party MP Philip Davies who has said : “This is the kind of metropolitan left wing political correct drivel which is so prevalent at the BBC that makes it so out of touch with the country at large”.
