A London council looks as if it is set to ban meat at its events as part of its strategy to fight climate change. From December, only vegan and vegetarian options will be offered and served at events hosted by Enfield Council. The local authority is understood to be the first in the UK to undertake such a move.
This move is contained in the council’s climate change “action plan”, the council said: “All events held by Enfield Council where catering is provided to offer only vegan or vegetarian options. Enfield council have already declared a climate emergency and its deputy leader Ian Barnes, who describes himself on his website as a ‘Director Writer Producer’, has said : “The emergency is real and the action to remedy it must be local, national and global”. In addition to this Mr Barnes said that in order to achieve Enfield council’s aim of being carbon neutral in 10 years will mean “taking bold and sometimes unpopular action”.
The move has been met with severe criticism. Mo Metcalf-Fisher who is from the Countryside Alliance too to Twitter to say : “A ban demonstrates no understanding of how meat in this country is produced. Thanks to UK farming practices, it’s among the most sustainable in the world. No surprise there was limited public consultation with this one… awful move”.
Mr Metcalf- Fisher also said, in an article for the ‘Free Market Conservatives’ : “Over the last few years we have witnessed multiple attempts to ban meat from university campuses up and down the country. Now Enfield Council are joining in. It’s authoritarian; bad for farmers, and bad for people”.
