BORIS JOHNSON’s chief negotiator with Europe David Frost has said that Michel Barnier must treat Britain as a sovereign state if he wants to secure any post-Brexit trade deal. A government spokesperson has stated that during the most recent round of talks David Frost told his EU counterpart that he would have to rethink his positions in order to reach a deal.
UNN’s Oliver Down understands that the two men had dinner on Monday night before re holding talks on Tuesday to discussion informal talks on a future relationship. A UK Government spokesman has said that the government are sceptical as to whether Brussels will accept the Prime Minister’s offer of a Canada-style free-trade agreement.
The spokesman said : “We have had constructive discussions and both sides have shown pragmatism and willingness to move on difficult areas. What is needed now is internal reflection on the EU side on whether what they’re asking us is consistent with our status as an independent country. If they do that and come to the correct conclusion, we’ll be able to move forward”.
It is understood that the UK and EU will now take a two-and-a-half-week summer break before returning for a further round of negotiations in Brussels on August the 17th. However, a European Commission spokeswoman said: “Michel Barnier is very busy, no holidays in sight”. Britain’s negotiator David Frost is expected to return to work on August the 10th in order to prepare for the following weeks crunch talks.
