The former US First Lady and wife of Barack Obama, Michelle Obama has announced that she is experiencing what she has described as “low-grade depression”. Mrs Obama has said that this is because of the pandemic, racial injustice and what she perceives to be the “hypocrisy” of President Trump’s administration.
Mrs Obama has described how she is currently managing “emotional highs and lows” that require you “knowing yourself” and that she is now undertaking “the things that do bring you joy”. Mrs Obama has said: “I’m waking up in the middle of the night because I’m worrying about something or there’s a heaviness. These are not, they are not fulfilling times spiritually. I know that I am dealing with some form of low-grade depression. Not just because of the quarantine, but because of the racial strife, and just seeing this administration, watching the hypocrisy of it, day in and day out, is dispiriting”.
These comments were made during the second episode of her ‘eponymous podcast’ when she interviewed the US journalist Michele Norris. Mrs Obama also said that it is “exhausting” to be “waking up to yet another story of a black man or a black person somehow being dehumanised, or hurt, or killed, or falsely accused of something”.
Jesse Lee Peterson took to Twitter to criticise Mrs Obama. He said ‘@MichelleObama your depression & “emotional highs & lows” have nothing to do with “racial injustice.” You don’t have peace because you’re an angry & hateful female. Forgive your parents, your BETA husband & stop hating men & whites—you need to repent! And lay off the tamales’.
