The most important 80 days in your life.

By the time you read this, there might well be less than 80 days until November 3^rd 2020 and unless you’ve been living under a particularly remote and isolated rock you’ll know that is the date of the US presidential election.

So why is this intervening period so vital – and so vital for people here in the UK?

My view is that this election will degenerate into chaos and acrimony the likes of which have never been seen before in any developed western society. All the ingredients for mayhem are already in plentiful supply. There’s racial tension being amplified and focused by the BLM movement. BLM have already been widely critiqued elsewhere and I will assume that you have read about the concerns about their hard-line Marxist philosophy and their anti-family, anti-police policies.

If that wasn’t a poisonous context in which to fight an election then just add the COVID debacle to the mix for good measure.  Concerns over postal voting, economic destruction, huge fiscal stimulus, unemployment, mass evictions and a looming depression mean that the USA has never been under so many simultaneous societal and economic stressors.

But we’re here in the UK with the Atlantic insulating us from all issues American? No. I hope you’ve been paying attention to our Prime Minister – you’ll see that he has clearly put all his chips on the ‘special relationship’ and raised two fingers to the rest of the world economic system. First – Boris has folded to US pressure to ban Huawei technology from the UK 5G rollout – China is not best pleased with that decision and there will be fallout from it.

Then there is the issue of the continued demonisation of Russia. Now Russia has its faults but it also has a vast amount of oil and gas for sale and they are there to do business. Snubbing Russia and their products would be a perfectly viable stance if your heavyweight hegemonic superpower wasn’t in such shoddy condition, tearing itself apart socially and economically.

Then there is Brexit – and despite my view, this is still a good idea for 1001 reasons we cannot exclude the fact that the EU is a spiteful and cynical cabal and I fully expect them to leverage their position against ours in any and all circumstances.

So where does this leave us here in the UK? – Well, we have to a greater or lesser extent annoyed everyone except the USA at a time when the world economy has been subjected to the biggest external shock in modern history. In any other period in recent history, this could be a potential advantage – despite the political sensitivities of forming a transatlantic trading bloc it would be a pragmatic approach to piggyback the UK onto the US hegemonic system. Selling this to the public in the light of the hubbub about chlorinated chicken and other manufactured outrages is a discussion for another day, but politics aside, the economic strength of the US could sustain and enhance the UK if we were to integrate with it.

I have no doubt that this is what is on Boris’ mind but his strategy falls apart if the American behemoth catches a cold – and in reality, America has not only a cold but also mitral valve stenosis and vascular dementia.

So as summer starts to wane we face 80 days until America goes to the polls, an America riven by race and crippled by COVID. Trump should have been able to walk this election but he has found himself wading through treacle carrying 3 bags of cement in his pockets. Every possible strategy has been deployed against him and the fact that he remains in office is a wonder in itself.

Lies, deep state plots and sustained media distortion have picked away at Trump but failed to deliver any real damage to the heavyweight president but COVID has undermined the economy and without prosperity, Trump’s arsenal looks weak.

In any normal election, Biden would have been quietly taken to one side and thrown out of the fire exit but this is the new normal and it’s not very normal at all. Biden is a husk of a man with a poor record as a legislator and questionable manners around young children, his running mate seems to have been chosen purely for her race and her gender. This really is a Potemkin offering from the Democrats offering absolutely no substance and one wonders in those circumstances who will be running the USA if Biden wins because it will not be Biden.

To use a gambling analogy we are in the highest stakes poker game in history, the last two players have thrown every single chip into the pot, they have bet the farm, their cars, their wristwatches and their underpants. Neither has a strong hand and neither can afford to lose.  We all know where this is going to end and a decisive victory with the loser accepting the result is the one thing that simply won’t happen.

To throw the largest economy in the world into a protracted legal battle about the result of an election is probably the most toxic and dangerous political situation you could ever think of, especially in the context of COVID and manufactured race wars. There has never been a greater chance of systemic breakdown and you have 80 days to prepare.

If you refer to the title of this piece you’ll see now why this is the most important 80 days in your life, you have that long to build stocks of supplies, get money out of risky investments or the banking system and prepare for the possibility that the ‘system’ you thought would always be there for you suddenly winks and goes out…
