The police are set to investigate the actions of officers who posed with guests at a wedding that was in contrast of the current COVID rules. 3 police officers are pictures smiling and kneeling in close proximity to guests.
UNN’s Oliver Down understands that the wedding began in Telford and then moved across the Midlands into Birmingham where more than 200 guests were present at the venue. The Chief Supt of West Mercia Police is Sue Thomas and she has put on record her disappointment after being made aware of the incident.
Chief Supt Thomas has said: “As part of their engagement with the wedding party our officers agreed to pose for a photo. Disappointingly, the officers do not appear to have reminded the group of the importance of social distancing or taken such measures themselves – and they will be spoken to about this”.
Residents nearby have stated that fireworks were set off as part of the festivities that lasted for two days. Another resident said: “This is not the time when you can celebrate big weddings.”
The footage which shows the officers kneeling has only added to the anger of some. One resident is quoted in the Birmingham Mail and has said: “At the end of the day, where is the social distancing? You have to go along with the coronavirus rules and it’s the police’s job to enforce those rules. The police are going to come out of it badly. Presumably, they knew this was taking place. They should have asked beforehand how the families were going to play this”.
West Mercia Police have stated that action will be taken. A force spokesman has said: “There was a large Asian wedding taking place through the week. The Safer Neighbourhood Team was on duty and conducting patrols to ensure public safety. We are aware that a number of the guests were driving in an inappropriate manner, which is being followed up in regards to who was driving. There will be a number of Section 59s being issued as a result”.
