Britain’s chief negotiator in the Brexit talks, David Frost has stated that the British government is not “scared” of walking away from Brexit talks without a trade deal that would come into force at the start of 2021. Mr Frost is quoted in today’s Mail on Sunday saying that the UK will exit the transition arrangement “come what may” at the end of the year.
Frost also took a jibe at Theresa May’s negotiating team as he stated that, in his opinion, they had “blinked and had its bluff called”. These remarks come against the backdrop of the EU negotiator Michel Barnier saying that he is “worried and disappointed” about a lack of concessions coming from the UK.
The eighth round of formal negotiations between the two sides will begin on Tuesday. UNN’s Oliver Down understands that both sides are keen to get a deal before the end of the month in order to have it ratified by the necessary politicians by the end of the year. The most considerable differences are on issues such as fishing and state aid rules.
Britain’s Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has predicted that this week’s talks could serve as “a wake up call for the EU” as well as stating that “the EU’s best moment to strike a deal is now.”
Lord Frost has said: “A lot of what we are trying to do this year is to get them to realise that we mean what we say and they should take our position seriously. We are not going to be a client state. We are not going to accept provisions that lock us into the way the EU do things”.
Lord Frost also said that Britain wishing to control its money and affairs “should not be controversial”. In addition to this he has said: “That’s what being an independent country is about, that’s what the British people voted for and that’s what will happen at the end of the year. I don’t think that we are scared of this at all. We want to get back the powers to control our borders and that is the most important thing”.
The chairman of the TIME party Robert Kimbell Tweeted to say “I speak here personally. Very proud so far of Lord Frost. Don’t let us down at the Final Hurdle, David!”.
