A Year 11 pupil who was shot near Kesgrave High School, in Ipswich, has been receiving “urgent” treatment after being airlifted to hospital with serious injuries, Suffolk police have confirmed they have arrested a teenager.
Armed police swarmed the scene of the shooting, about a 10-minute walk from Kesgrave High School, and a shaken parent told how her daughter and other children ran to her home after hearing gunfire and a woman screaming “run, someone has been shot”.
Paramedics were seen treating a person on a stretcher as police told people living nearby to stay inside their homes and urged others to avoid the area, and an air ambulance took off just before 10am.
Parents said schools and nurseries in the market town were put on “lockdown”, with children at one nursery moved upstairs to be “away from ground floor windows”.
In the aftermath, a mother wrote on Facebook: “Something major has happened on Grange Farm. My daughter and friends were walking to school and heard what sounded exactly like a gunshot.
“Then lots of people screaming and a lady saying ‘run, someone has been shot’.
“I had four terrified children come running back to mine. There are now at least four police cars lined up outside the road involved. Stay safe eveyone.”
A police spokesperson said: “A teenager has been arrested following a shooting in Kesgrave.
“Police were called just after 8.40am this morning, Monday 7 September, to reports of a shooting in Friends Walk.
“The victim – a 15-year-old boy – sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital where he is receiving urgent medical attention.
“Officers investigating this incident have arrested a teenage boy and he has been taken into police custody for questioning.”
Assistant Chief Constable Rob Jones said: “Following this serious incident our priority is to keep everyone safe.
“We have now made an arrest as part of the investigation and are working with our partners in Suffolk and our schools to ensure that everyone feels safe when they are collecting their children from school this afternoon.
“There will be more police officers on patrol and to provide reassurance in the area and I would ask for anyone with information about this incident to come forward.”
