Education Secretary Gavin Williamson says Britons should be ‘very proud’ of Great Britain’s history

The Education Secretary has said it is ‘really important’ that Children should be taught ‘the good and bad about history’ as he declared Britons we should be ‘very proud’ of Britain’s past.

Gavin Williamson has indicated he would be ‘incredibly interested’ in making sure the country’s history curriculum is ‘reflective’ of Britain’s diverse population.

Speaking with the Sunday Telegraph he said: “It is really important that the history taught in schools looks at the rich diversity and tapestry that has made our nation so great, and the important role that people from all backgrounds have played in our history.”

Mr Williamson said Britons should be “very proud of our history,” adding: “I would always want schools to be celebrating our great nation’s history and the important role that we have played in the world and shaping the world for the better.”

The Education Secretary said this means, ‘making sure we are always very reflective of the diversity and of all those people who have made an important role in making the history of our nation.’

His comments come after private schools revealed plans to alter history lessons in an attempt to ‘decolonise’ their curriculums in the wake of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests earlier this year.

Top independent schools such as Winchester, Fettes, Ampleforth and St Paul’s Girls are said to be ‘formulating new approaches’ to teaching about Britain’s colonial past.

Asked about this at the time, Mr Williamson said children should learn about ‘the good and the bad’ of the country’s past; he added: “It is absolutely vitally important, incredibly important, that when children are learning about our nation’s history, they learn all aspects of it.’”
