European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen has urged EU leaders to back the Brexit trade agreement at their Brussels summit next month however also warned that talks with Britain could still end in no deal.
“We will do all in our power to reach an agreement, we’re ready to be creative. But we are not ready to put into question the integrity of the single market, the main safeguard for European prosperity and wealth,” Mrs von der Leyen said.
She told the heads of state and government of the remaining 27 member states to stay united.
“It is when we negotiate hard and then stick to the compromise found that we move forward fast,”
“These are decisive days for negotiations with the United Kingdom. But, frankly, I cannot tell you today if, in the end, there will be a deal,” she told MEPs, who must ratify the deal after it is backed by EU leaders.
On Wednesday France’s Les Echos newspaper reported the EU’s chief negotiator, Mr Barnier had told David Frost, the UK’s chief negotiator there was no point in his travelling to London this weekend unless there was progress on the three issues.
Brexit trade negotiations are continuing this week online after a member of Mr Barnier’s team tested positive for coronavirus.
