Prime Minister Boris Johnson has thrown his support behind a campaign to encourage people to eat British-caught fish that could help the industry combat post-Brexit disruption.
The PM backed calls for the campaign during a video conference with Conservative MPs from coastal areas.
Mr Johnson also promised to do more to tackle concerns about quotas and the ban on shellfish exports to the European Union.
Opposition party Labour also said they wanted more Brits to consume British-caught fish but claimed that in itself would not save the industry.
Some fishing industry leaders have accused the government of being “in denial” about the scale of the problems facing it, Barrie Deas, chief executive of the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations, said fishing communities were “very disappointed” with the post-Brexit trade deal signed by Mr Johnson.
This gave “free access” to EU fleets to fish in UK waters, he added, but without “securing revised quota shares that would reflect the UK’s new status as an independent coastal state”.
Mr Deas did however welcome the idea of a buy British campaign, he told reporters that his organisation was getting large numbers of emails from members of the public asking where they could buy British fish.
