Illegal Immigration Crisis: Six boats carrying 183 on board intercepted.

Six boats carrying 183 suspected illegal migrants onboard have reached the United Kingdom after being picked up by Border Force in the English Channel.

The figure is the highest daily number so far this year and is just under the total in the whole of March 2020 when 187 people made the crossing.

The Home Office also confirmed French authorities stopped around 50 people from attempting the crossing.

Around 850 have so far made the unlawful crossing compared to 338 in the same period last year – more than 8,438 people crossed the English Channel in around 635 boats in 2020 alone.

Home Secretary Priti Patel is planning to set out a new system she says will be “fairer” and also crackdown on illegal people-smuggling gangs.

Under the plans, people who enter the UK illegally to claim asylum will no longer have the same entitlements as those who arrive legally.

Previously deported criminals could face five years in prison if they are found to have re-entered the United Kingdom unlawfully after being deported to their home nation.
