Shocking footage reveals wheelchair patient’s sickening physical abuse at brain injury centre in Hall Green

This is the shocking moment a vulnerable patient at a brain injury rehab centre is toppled from his wheelchair by a staff member.

The footage that has caused alarm around the UK shows the man being pushed and falling onto concrete in an outside area for The Olive Carter Unit at Hunters Moor Neurorehabilitation Centre for the West Midlands, in Hall Green.

West Midlands Police were notified of the violent incident, but it is understood no arrests were made.

The staff member involved was later sacked by the centre and several other members of staff, who had initially been suspended over the incident, no longer work for the service.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC), who regulate services to make sure they meet fundamental standards of quality and safety, found the centre “required improvement” after a damning inspection during the pandemic.

The CQC found “patients were not always treated with kindness and compassion” following the shocking incident in May last year. Part of the CQC’s inspection summary following the unannounced visit read: “There had been an incident of physical abuse towards one patient by a member of staff.

“The provider reported the incident to the police the local safeguarding team and CQC as soon as they became aware of this.

“In addition, three members of staff have been suspended and the perpetrator has been dismissed. Patients told us that some staff did not communicate with patients and ignored their request for information.”

One former patient told BirminghamLive what it was like to be housed in the centre “It was awful to be in there,

“It’s meant to be a place of rehabilitation, but there was a fear of being grabbed all the time. The actions from the worker in the video is disgusting.”
