I cannot be alone in feeling this way.
According to the BBC and the rest of the mainstream media, on Saturday we did not have another massive rally for freedom from COVID-19 restrictions and an end to vaccine passports in London. But we did. While I participated from the comfort of my own conservatory, I was kept up to date regularly with clips sent to me by friends on the march. And it was massive. A video taken at one point in the march recorded that the protesters took an hour and seventeen minutes to pass. On the other hand, there was plenty of coverage of a wedding that took place—in ‘secret’—at Westminster Cathedral.
However, I wonder if the rallies in London are having more influence on the government than it will admit. The Sunday Telegraph ran a front page exclusive on how the government was planning to shelve the use of vaccine passports within the UK. Nevertheless, by the time you read to the end that famous person ‘Spokesman Said’ warned that no final decision had been taken. If the government is getting wobbly legs over the possible imposition of vaccine passports, then let us hope and pray they are also getting the wobblies about extending any of our current restrictions beyond 21 June. With exactly twenty days to go and with absolutely no evidence that the government, SAGE or the Department of Health are open to debate and amenable to persuasion then there is probably more need for these protests than ever before. That was certainly the view of the Hon Toby Young when interviewed for the London Calling podcast by James Delingpole. Both, along with Lawrence Fox and tens of thousands of others participated in the London rally at the weekend.
We are at a precarious stage on the road to freedom. The harbingers of doom are mobilising, and Boris Johnson is having the fear of his newly found God instilled into him about the possibility of a third wave of COVID-19 if we let people live their lives without hindrance. Just like we used to do until early in March 2020. The Indian variant of COVID-19 (sorry COVID-19 variant delta) is being weaponised as an excuse for extended restrictions. If these are extended, then it will be inevitable that further restrictions will follow. The Indian variant is proving no more lethal than any of its predecessors; in fact, it seems to be less so, despite being more infectious. COVID-19 infections are at an all-time low and deaths—except for those directly affected—are negligible. Yesterday zero COVID-19 attributable deaths were recorded for the first time in the pandemic. Tim Spector on the most recent weekly Zoe Study YouTube showed evidence suggesting that the vaccines, in addition to a wide range of side-effects and possible associated deaths, were working to prevent the spread of the coronavirus; something with which the government—despite proclaiming the vaccine rollout a ‘success’—clearly does not agree.
There is every reason to lift the current restrictions, most of which are not evidence based and none of which should have been imposed in the first place. I get the impression with my own eyes, despite the polls, that a huge number of people are ignoring restrictions such as social distancing and numbers permitted to congregate, indoors or outdoors. The sun is shining at last; people have seen the inside of pubs and restaurants again and are enjoying seeing each other more freely. If the government reads the mood of the people wrongly—the real people, not those responding in cowering terms to the polls—then they may well regret it. Of all people, Boris must know that Churchill won a war and then lost an election.
