It has emerged that 31 police officers in London have each been handed a £200 fine after they had a professional barber in to cut their hair at a police station. The barber was hired and asked to come in and cut the officers hair at Bethnal Green police station in East London on Sunday the 17th of January 17. This was while the country was in its third lockdown.
UNN’s Oliver Down understands that the 31 Metropolitan Police officers involved have all been given the fixed penalty notices for breaking Covid-19 regulations while on duty. In addition to this, the two officers who organised the haircutting session are now under investigation for misconduct. These latest reports have emerged days after it was revealed that nine Met officers were fined £200 each after they were caught eating breakfast together inside a London café, in breach of lockdown rules.
A source has said that the barber at Bethnal Green station cut the officers’ hair for £10 each. The source said: ‘There were around 100 officers in total but someone informed senior management about what was happening, and all hell broke loose. There are 31 officers being fined and that is causing problems in itself because there were plenty of others who had their hair cut and got away with it’.
Detective Chief Superintendent Marcus Barnett has responded to the news by saying: ‘It is deeply disappointing and frustrating that my officers have fallen short of the expectation to uphold Covid-19 regulations. Although officers donated money to charity as part of the haircut, this does not excuse them from what was a very poor decision. I expect a lot more of them. It is right therefore, officers should each face a £200 fine, as well as misconduct action for those two who organised this event. Quite rightly, the public expect police to be role models in following the regulations which are designed to prevent the spread of this deadly virus’.
