Former Attorney General and MP for Beaconsfield Dominic Grieve has once again been offering his thoughts on Brexit as he has described the Conservative party leadership candidates’ hardening of position on the controversial Irish backstop as “significant”. Both men stated that the backstop was “dead” and virtually ruled out a time limit.
This is once of the clearest movements so far towards a no-deal Brexit outcome. As well as these comments, Grieve at an event in London has spoken of a “talibanisation” of the party and stated that the threat of de-selection is the reason that Tory MP’s are not speaking out against no deal in their droves.
However, Mr Grieve who has tabled a number of motions looking to stop no deals has stated that a government seeking no deal would implode and he would favour senior Tories voting down its own government. Mr Grieve believes he carries considerable Conservative party support to prevent the UK from leaving on 31st October without a deal.
Against the backdrop of all of this, the EU has stated on many occasions that it will not reopen the withdrawal agreement and that any deal would be subject to the backstop being accepted. In a further twist Ursula Von der Leyen, the first female Minister of defence in Germany and a candidate to become the next European Commission president has stated that “I stand ready for further extension of the withdrawal date should more time be required for a good reason.” It would appear whilst the UK remain split on how to proceed with Brexit so are the European union’s potential top brass.
