HUGE speculation the ‘Political Elite’ are preparing for a General Election

Despite only being Prime Minister for a fortnight Boris Johnson has employed Isaac Levido who is an election specialist amid speculation he is preparing for a snap general election. Isaac Levido will take up the title of director of politics and campaigning at CCHQ with immediate effect. Mr Levido will report directly to Dominic Cummings who is the PM’s chief strategist. This will serve to fuel speculation that Mr Johnson is planning on calling a snap poll. This is in clear opposition to Boris Johnson’s comments yesterday when he said a general election was the “last thing I want to do”.

Despite the House of Commons being on its summer recess, it would be fair to suggest that the Brexit process is far from being on hold. Following Dominic Cumming’s report that stated said it is too late for MPs to prevent a no-deal exit from the European Union, all government departments at Whitehall were given a 48-hours to prove their readiness for no deal. The remaining nations in the EU were reportedly very concerned about Mr Cumming’s findings. Many in the City of London are convinced of the imminent General election. Last week Tom Murdoch, who is an expert in Charitable law in the City spoke at an IMPRESS event also attended by the DCMS warned of election law relating to a period of 100 days prior to a general election which is fast approaching.

Before Mr Johnson took office, many thought a general election was a necessity. However, speculation has been ramped up by Mr Johnson’s dramatic boost of public spending in his fortnight in office. One example of this was the £1.8bn pledged for the NHS, which the conservatives insist is new money and was not simply a case of moving previously allocated treasury money around. Public spending has historically occurred towards the end of a parliament prior to a general election as a simple tool of managing public perception.
An early general election is the talk all around Westminster. The Labour party’s health spokesman and Leicester MP Jonathan Ashworth has stated an election could be “very soon,” and stated that this NHS cash boost was a government tactic to win over voters ahead of a snap poll. The Labour Party has strongly hinted a confidence vote could be imminent when Parliament returns in early September before party conference season. Rebel tory MP’s such as the ex-chancellor Phillip Hammond has not ruled out voting against a Boris Johnson government pursuing a no-deal Brexit with a technical majority of only one.
