Archbishop of Canterbury criticised for getting political over Brexit

Many prominent Brexiteers including the former Conservative party leader Iain Duncan Smith have been quick to criticise Mr Welby, he said “I generally don’t criticise the archbishop. But he shouldn’t allow himself to be tempted into what is essentially a very political issue right now.” Another who is far from impressed is Mark Francois the vice-chair of the European Research Group who stated that many will be frustrated by the Archbishop’s comments saying “I suspect they will not be overjoyed by having it rubbed in by the Archbishop of Canterbury to boot”.

However, it should be noted that the Archbishop of Canterbury has received support. The Bishop of Buckingham has jumped to the defence of the Archbishop. The Right Rev Alan Wilson said: “In a mature democracy people would not be afraid of doing this, because it would show what people’s concerns and fears and hopes and aspirations around this subject were.” Ever since the referendum in 2016 Mr Welby has been extremely outspoken on Brexit.

The Archbishop has spoken in the House of Lords and said that post-Brexit Britain has seen an “out-welling of poison and hatred.” He went on to say that “It is essential not only in this house but for the leaders of both sides and throughout our society to challenge the attacks, the xenophobia and the racism that seem to have been felt to be acceptable at least for a while.”
