The Outspoken former Prime Minister and Labour’s longest-standing Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown has called for MP’s in parliament to hold an inquiry into a no-deal Brexit. Mr Brown has put forward a plan for MP’s to attempt to take control of commons business for a day in order to “pass a law that says that the Government must instruct and produce an independent report on the consequences of a no-deal.” Whilst the MSM have revelled in these developments, others have rubbished Mr Brown’s plans and have cited his actions whilst in government.
Gordon Brown was grilled on BBC’s Radio 4 Today Programme, where Simon Jack has been widely praised for the job, he did on holding Mr Brown to account for his comments. Mr Jack was pulling no punches when he stated that “Boris is trying to hit the reset button. He has said he wants a deal, that it would be in both party’s interest to get a deal. People like you are undermining the negotiating hand of Britain.” Mr Jack’s conduct is a refreshing juxtaposition from previous BBC conduct where they have been accused of an anti-Brexit bias on a number of occasions.
Others have chosen to attack Mr Brown’s comments based on his performance when in government. One tweet by @brexitblog_info stated that “Before they do that, I’d like an enquiry into why Brown: sold off our gold on the cheap wrecked pensions with his stealth taxes turned millions into benefit junkies with his disastrous tax credits basically fucked the whole country’s economy.”
Gordon Brown, who spoke at a Hope not Hate event against a no-deal Brexit, was described by the Guardian as “a prime minister so beleaguered, so unpopular and seemingly exhausted, so apparently luckless and unsuited to the job, that he attracts general ridicule and even pity.” In addition to this, he was described by the much-maligned Tony Blair as having “zero” emotional intelligence in his memoirs released in 2017.
