Manchester Politician wants City to seek help from Sadiq Khan to tackle knife crime

UNN has obtained quotes via the Manchester Evening News from a senior politician that argue Manchester should look to London for help to tackle knife crime. Pat Karney, who is a Labour Councillor in Manchester has stated he will contact the mayor of London Mayor Sadiq Khan to ask how officials in Greater Manchester can work to eliminate knife crime in their city. Only this week, two teenagers were injured during a knife attack at a McDonald’s restaurant in a suburb of the City.

This incident was the seventh stabbing in Manchester in the last 8 eight days alone. Following this, Mr Karney took to Twitter to state that he was “shocked” to hear about the attack. The Manchester evening news claims to have quotes from Mr Karney that say “: “The person who knows most about this is Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, and he’s done the most work on this. I will check out if there is anything we can learn from London where knife fights have led to murder”. 

Some may see these comments as controversial, given the rise in knife crime on Mr Khan’s watch. A common tactic used by the authorities is an increase in stop and search powers. This is a tactic that has been repeatedly rejected by Mr Khan. 

Greater Manchester Police are saying that they have stepped up patrols have been ramped up across the city in an effort to reassure residents of the City. UNN’s Oliver Down has attempted to make contact with Mr Karney for further context on his comments but has been able to obtain a response as of yet.
