Well respected Financial Times columnist Charles Grant has today published a shock article that the government is looking to stay in the single market for goods. 10 Downing street is pushing the proposal and this would mean considerable concessions to the EU on things like controlling immigration. Grant wrote:
“The challenge, however, is that the EU would never agree to Britain being in the single market for goods unless it adopted all relevant rules, submitted to a punishment mechanism for any deviation, and accepted some oversight by the European Court of Justice… If the UK does request membership of the single market in goods, the EU’s initial reaction will be no. Michel Barnier, the European Commission’s chief negotiator, says the single market is “ binary” — you are either in all or none of it — and must involve free movement of labour.”
By doing what Grant suggests is being considered then it would again seem that we would be leaving the EU in all but name only. This is also a significant crossing of red lines set by both the Government and Brexiters in the cabinet.
There is concern in Whitehall that key Brexit backers such as Boris Johnson have been bought off with the increased spends to the NHS. Many commentators say no matter what happens this is not the real Brexit 17.4 million people voted for.
