An amendment has just been voted on within the House of Lords and once again the Government has suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the unelected Lords. They voted 354 to 235 in favour of the amendment to the EU Withdrawal Bill, the amendment was introduced by Viscount Hailsham who famously used his expenses as an MP to have his moat cleaned.
The amendment is a a huge blow to Theresa May’s Brexit plans and raises the spectre of defeat at the hands of MPs on Wednesday. The change given the nod by peers will force ministers to report back to Parliament with their progress on securing a divorce deal by January 21 next year.
If no agreement with the European Union has been struck by then, the Government would need to outline what it intends to do next – and then put its plan to a vote in the Commons. Hailsham said that this vote was in ‘honour’ of the MP Dominic Grieve.
A spokesperson for the Government said: “Agreeing to amendable motions would allow Parliament to direct Government on its approach to exiting the EU and so does not meet the reasonable tests set out by the Prime Minister and Brexit Secretary last week.
“However, we are pleased that the Lords have adopted the vast majority of the Government’s amendment tabled last week. We will seek to overturn the Lords’ decision when the Bill returns to the House of Commons on Wednesday.”
