Boris Johnson has resigned as Foreign Secretary as a political earthquake erupts over the Prime Minister’ s Soft Brexit Plans. He follows on from Brexit Secretary David Davis who resigned earlier in the day along with two junior ministers.
His departure came 30 minutes before Theresa May is due to address Parliament about her new Brexit plan, which has angered many Tory MPs. In a statement, No 10 thanked Mr Johnson for his work and said a replacement would be announced shortly.
According to reports coming in Conservative MP’s are en masse signing letters to be sent to Graham Brady the Chairman of the 1922 committee of the Tory Party. 48 letters are needed for a leadership challenge to be triggered.
The European Research Group of Tory MP’s headed by Jacob Rees Mogg has rounded on the Prime Minister, accusing her of striking a deal with Remain ministers so they keep their jobs. They are also set to go after the cabinet including Boris Johnson and David Davis who they see as total sell outs in not standing up to May.
An insider has said: “She may have won this battle, but she will soon be finished – and most of her Cabinet with her. They have all put themselves before the party, the will of the people and the future of the country. Their behaviour has been unforgivable. They are all talk and no trousers. When the going got tough the deserted us.”
David Clews, Spokesperson for UK Unity, the grassroots campaign to leave the EU has said: “Despite all the talk of principles and sticking up for the vote to leave the EU, Boris Johnson, David Davis, Michael Gove, Liam Fox etc have all been taken for MUGS by the remainer- in- chief Theresa May. They are now resigning en masse but we fear it may be too late. If the coupe to replace May is unsuccessful then Brexit is DOOMED!”
The letters are only announced if 48 are received but the concern is that parliamentary party will vote to keep May in charge and the zero Brexit she has announced will be pushed through.
UPDATE- David Davis and other Junior Ministers have resigned but Davis has indicated he does not support a leadership contest against Theresa May.
