A public survey conducted by OBR International has concluded that the public approval of the Government’s handling of the coronavirus crisis has fallen for a second week in a row. This is according to a poll that has been tracking opinion across the duration of the pandemic in the UK.
The proportion of respondents who approve of the Government’s response to the outbreak dropped by 7 per cent, to 52 per cent, with 40 per cent stating that they disapproved. This was the second consecutive week which was a drop in approval of the government’s strategy. This has led some, such as the Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage to welcome to news that Prime Minister Boris Johnson will return to work on Monday and saying that the country will need reinspiring.
Interestingly almost half (48 per cent) of the 2,103 adults surveyed by ORB International said that the Government was doing all it could to increase testing and deliver personal protective equipment (PPE) to the NHS. This is despite fierce criticism of the government by MPs and some sections of the media on its handling the issue.
Even more interestingly, of OBR’s small sample of NHS staff included in the poll, 52 per cent said they believed the Government was doing all it could on PPE and testing which was higher than the national average. 42 per cent disagreed with this statement when asked.
In the latest voting intention polling carried out by ‘Opinium Research’ the Conservative lead was down one percentage point to 50% with the Labour Party jumping one point to 33% with the Liberal Democrats some way back in third place on 7%.
