The BBC has confirmed that the patriotic anthems ‘Rule Britania’ and ‘Land of Hope And Glory’ will be performed as orchestral versions with no singing on the Last Night Of The Proms this year. Reports were emerging that the songs may be axed due to its perceived links to colonialism but the BBC confirmed last night that the songs would be adapted without a singer.
The BBC’s media and arts correspondent, David Sillito said last night: “The Last Night of the Proms will still have Jerusalem, the national anthem and new orchestral versions of Rule, Britannia! and Land of Hope and Glory”.
This has caused considerable debate across the UK, with many offering their thoughts on these developments. Laurence Fox took to Twitter and pulled no punches in his response, he tweeted this morning ‘Defend this shameful, Britain-hating organisation and start again. The lunatics are in charge of the asylum #Defund the BBC.’
Alexander Stafford who is the Tory MP for Rother Valley tweeted: ‘Very disappointed that the BBC is not using the words to some of our finest British songs. Are they ashamed to be British? I’m certainly not. Anyone fancy sing song instead to show that ‘Britons will never, never never be slaves’.
The chairman of the Brexit party Richard Tice has said: ‘If BBC wants to cancel our patriotism & our history by not singing Rule Britannia & Land of Hope & Glory, so I want to cancel my license fee. They are in breach of their contract with the British people #DefundTheBBC.’
