Police in England have launched a massive nationwide counter terrorism operation today causing thousands of travellers to face huge delays at Britain’s busiest ports.
Every vehicle and passenger was checked as nine mile queues and 10 hour delays were reported heading into the Channel port of Dover in Kent as well as the Channel Tunnel.
Video has emerged on social media of what appeared to be armed police storming the docks at around 11.30am.
Multiple vehicles were seen storming into the Port of Dover with blue flashing lights and sirens blaring.
Police confirmed today the incident was a counter terror operation but refused to go into detail about the operation.
A spokesman for Counter Terrorism Policing said:
“We can confirm that a request was made on September 15 by Counter Terrorism Policing nationally for enhanced security checks to be carried out at UK ports.
This was in relation to ongoing operational activity and this requirement has since been stood down.
We would like to reassure the public that there is no threat to public safety in relation to this activity and thank all those affected for their cooperation and understanding.”
A Met Police spokesman confirmed no arrests were made but would not explain why enhanced security checks were no longer required, stressing there is no threat to the general public.
Kent police officers were implemented at around 7am on Tuesday with enhanced security checks at the Port.
