Fallout from Bristol riots continues as shocking scenes travel around the world

Following the ‘KillTheBill’ protests in Bristol last night seven arrests have been made as 12 officers were injured after a violent night of rioting and vandalism. UNN’s Oliver Down understands that Avon and Somerset Police will hold a press conference on Monday morning. In addition to this it us understood that police officers were present in the centre of Bristol until 4:30am. 

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police has said: “I can confirm seven arrests have been made overnight. We will now be carrying out a significant investigation to identify all those responsible. There were in the region of 12 officers injured – with two taken to hospital with serious injuries. We will be carrying out high profile patrols today”.

Yesterday’s events in Bristol began at College Green at 2pm. However, by around 6pm Bridewell Police Station in the centre of Bristol was under attack and the police station remained under siege for a number of hours. Live footage showed at least one police van burnt out with others covered in graffiti.

A viral video on social media has shown one particular protestor smashing the window of the police station with a skateboard. Other footage has shown protestors managing to get up onto the roof of the first floor of the police station and then aiming missiles down at the police below who had lined up to defend the entrance of the police station.

The Labour Mayor of Bristol Marvin Rees took to Good Morning Britain this morning and said: “What they have done has nothing to do with the bill and, in fact, as everyone has pointed out and as I pointed out yesterday, it will be used as evidence by people who want to support the bill. They have no strategy, they have no connection to any real politics – it is just them taking the opportunity to express their emotions, whatever distorted source they have”.
