Reports are coming out that Angela Merkel, the controversial leader of Germany is set to step down in December as leader of the CDU after nearly 20 years at the helm. She was set to be challenged for the leadership after her party had fallen into freefall and has jumped before she was pushed.
She has reportedly told party colleagues that she will not stand for re-election as leader of her ruling CDU party after more heavy losses in regional elections in Hesse yesterday. Merkel has held the post of CDU chairwoman since 2000 – while she will remain as Chancellor for the time being, this will fire the starting gun for the race to succeed her. She has indicated she will attempt to cling on as Chancellor but this does not seem a likely scenario.
Many users have taken to social media to proclaim their glee with this news. She famously opened the borders to millions of Syrian and other ‘refugees’ during the height of the Syrian civil war.
Since then Germany has witnessed unprecedented amounts of terrorism as well as sex attacks on women and stabbings. There have also been growing street protests after a German man was murdered in Chemnitz by Migrants. The populist party the AfD is making huge gains and it appears the existing German political order could be set to collapse.
