The UK is currently facing massive shortages across the supply chain in the food industry. There is a variety of explanations for this depending on political outlook ranging from Brexit, Covid19, workers not prepared to do the jobs etc.
The desperation for workers in the food supply sector is now so great that many companies are trying to hire prisoners via a programme that allows inmates on day release to do paid work. Some have argued this is being done in order to attain cheap labour.
The Association of Independent Meat Suppliers will reportedly meet with HM Prison Service this week to ask it to prioritise food suppliers with its Release on Temporary Licence (ROTL) scheme.
Trade association Logistics UK has insisted the Government “must prioritise the granting of 10,000 temporary work visas to encourage EU drivers to return” to helpfill a “gaping hole in the workforce” as peak trading season approaches.
The shortfall of as many as 100,000 drivers has begun to take its toll across industries from retail to construction as firms struggle to secure lorries to transport goods from ports, factories, suppliers and warehouses to their intended destination.
