North Shropshire by-election –the spoiled choice ?

The date for the by-election at North Shropshire is this Thursday 16^th December.

There are total of fourteen candidates, three more than the eleven who stood in the Old Bexley and Sidcup by-election on December 2^nd.

As with the previous by-election, with this one candidates have been sent a questionnaire on covid-19 related policy issues. This more one refers to some of the government’s recent announcements on more restrictions.

By- elections have been notorious for the mainstream parties going out of their way to avoid debating some of the more serious covid policy issues. They know they have been acting as one except on some minor details which are often of little consequence. They just don’t want the electorate to be aware that there are other, more viable, ways of dealing with this crisis.

The questionnaire is an effort to help those voters of North Shropshire who believe covid policies are important, to decide who out of the many candidates is going to merit having their one vote.

The candidates have also been sent a number of other questionnaires from organisations and individuals, and some candidates have completed them all.

This is an important factor, because courtesy in dealing with such approaches is important.

It is something the local media in the area could take up, but unfortunately do not seem to do so.

The various controversies involving the government will certainly make some voters look at the wide range of alternative candidates available at this election.

CANDIDATES’ QUESTIONNAIRE:

1a). Do you believe lockdowns were the correct response to the pandemic ? Until there was a vaccine which would protect people from dying from the effects of Covid they had to do something, a lockdown seemed the only solution, was it quick enough? Was it long enough? Was it the correct response, in the absence of a vaccine, yes.

1b). Were you aware they were not the tried and tested WHO approved pandemic response? Yes, but it was clear that being close to other humans spread the pandemic, so given it was not tried and tested, it was the only solution at the time.

1c). Has the collateral cost (national debt, NHS queues, domestic violence, mental health, education disruption, supply chain disruption) been worth it? No, I don’t believe it has. But do we let people die to protect the mental health of everybody else? I don’t think we could allow that to protect the mental health of the nation. I know that the cost to society will be significant, and in some cases, not Coronavirus related, it will be fatal.

1d) Have children born the worst brunt of the Government’s covid policies suffering negative health, mental health and education effects? No, I think it is the young to middle aged groups, with loss of income, not being seen by a dr, not being able to progress treatments. The suffering of people will outlast the pandemic, that is for sure.

2a) Do you believe in mass covid-19 testing and tracing ? No. Unless people were tested everyday it would be impossible to assess the risk. Mass testing and tracing is not a solution.

2b) Do you believe PCR and LFT tests are reliable enough?
I have taken lots of LFT, I have to prior to attending a meeting. Last week when the LFT was positive, I took a second positive test then took a PCR test, which was also positive. In my experience, Yes.

2c) Would resources have been better spent manning fever or isolation hospitals? Yes/No
The government created a number of additional Nightingale hospitals, at great expense, but were not used, so I don’t believe the response to create the hospitals was necessary.

3a) Do you believe in the restrictions imposed on foreign travel? No. If you have been vaccinated (double), and you can prove that, then foreign travel is no more dangerous than it was before.

3b) Should these restrictions have come in earlier? Yes, until the vaccine was available.

3c) Are restrictions any longer justified (now we know that covid has a much lower Infection fatality ratio than earlier predictions and is negligible in under 65s, and a mean age of covid attributed death of over 80? No.

4a) Do you believe the travel quarantine regulations are reasonable? (Please note there is a further question, 14, on this area). No

No, should it be necessary, quarantine at home would have been better for travellers and a more cost effective way of managing the risk of spreading the disease. The route taken made travel very expensive.

4b) Do you believe the current domestic self isolation rules are acceptable? We cannot stop the spread of Coronovirus, but if vaccines stop people from dying from it, then we need to vaccinate. As long as people know the risks, then people have to be allowed to make their own choices in life.

5) With regard to the covid-19 mass vaccination programme:

a) Are you aware that the vaccines have not been shown in clinical trials to reduce transmission, hospitalisation or death, that they were not designed forthis purpose?

b) Are you aware that the phase 3 trials are not over, that the safety data is not complete; that the earliest trials will run into 2023?Yes

e) Do you believe that school facilities should be used for covid -19 vaccinations ?No, there are plenty of other locations not using schools.
f) Do you agree with the government’s policy of mandatory vaccinations for Care Home staff ?Yes, but if somebody doesn’t want to have it, they shouldn’t lose their job, they should be assigned to a position where they don’t have contact with residents.
g) Do you agree with the government’s policy of mandatory vaccinations for NHS front line staff? Yes, but if somebody doesn’t want to have it, they shouldn’t lose their job, they should be assigned to a position where they don’t have contact with patients and vulnerable people.
h) Do you agree with any mandatory covid-19 vaccinations policies for any other body? No
i) Do you agree with Covid passes and restriction of access to travel and facilities for those who refuse the vaccination for whatever reason?Yes, unless they are exempt. Having travelled myself to France in September, I felt some comfort that wherever we went we had to show we had been double vaccinated.
j) Do you believe the government’s covid-19 vaccinations policy is coercive?Yes, if you are not double vaccinated, you are restricted in what you can do.
k) Do you believe there has been properly Informed Consent for vaccination? I haven’t been asked if I want to be vaccinated. You feel you have a moral obligation to get vaccinated to protect others.

6a.) Do you believe the Yellow Card reporting scheme for covid vaccine adverse reactions and fatalities is fit for purpose Yes/No
I don’t know.

6b) Should the MHRA (the regulatory body that runs the Yellow Card Scheme) be mandated to follow up every vaccine death and report them as it does Covid deaths? I don’t know

6c) Do you believe the government is spending too much of taxpayers money on covid-19 vaccines and not enough on improving the health and immune systems of the population ? Yes, but unless we vaccinate everybody, the disease will continue and variants will continue to develop.

6d). Do you believe that the total possible compensation for any covid-19 damage or death capped at £120,000 https://www.gov.uk/vaccine-damage-payment is adequate? No, each circumstance should be judged on its own merits and the amount of compensation relevant.

6e). Do you think the government was right to indemnify Pfizer and the other vaccine producing companies against vaccine injury? Yes, otherwise they would not want to make the vaccine.

7a) Do you believe that freedom of speech and assembly have been adversely affected by the government’s Covid restrictions? Yes, if you say what you think, people are quick to judge, especially on social media.

7b) Do you agree with covid regulation breaching fines or punishments? No, especially in light of the gov breaking regulations and haven’t been fined, when other people have been fined. You can’t have one rule for one and not for them.

7c) Have Covid regulation breaches rules been fairly applied? No

Has there been one rule for politicians and another for the people? Yes, clearly there has been a significant lack of judgement from staff who work at No. 10 and other staff that have resigned over them thinking the rules don’t apply to them.

8) Do you believe it should be compulsory to wear face masks in any setting? No, I don’t believe you can get people to wear a face mask in any setting.

9) Will you commit to signing the Petition for a Referendum on the UK Coronavirus Act to put pressure on the government to abolish it ? https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/597665

No, the remaining measures end in March, by the time a referendum has been tabled, the measures would have ended.

10) Will you commit to reviewing the Public Health Act 1984 as to its use during the covid crisis? Yes

11) Should all covid-19 restrictions end and all freedoms be restored immediately ? No. As much as I would like to say yes, I don’t think ending restrictions will stop the spread of the virus.

12) Do you believe the conduct of government Ministers, MP’s, Civil and Public Servants, Senior NHS and media personnel involved in the promotion of the government’s covid-19 policies should be investigated criminally? No, it would be a waste of police time because they probably haven’t committed a criminal offence, and if they have, and have been caught, will hopefully be fined. As far as I am aware, those who break the rules end up resigning their job.

13.) In respect of the government announcements regarding the “Omicron” variant:

13a) Do you believe they are an overreaction? No, they are taking the variant seriously.

13a) Do you agree that the instruction on wearing face masks in shops and public transport is justified?

Yes, I guess so, a small space, people want to feel protected and if that means me wearing a mask, then I will wear a mask. People are worried about catching Coronovirus, if wearing mask helps, I will wear a mask.

13c.) Do you agree that schoolchildren should wear face masks?
No, the risk from children to their health from Coronavirus is pretty small, I don’t think the cost of children wearing face masks justifies it. If they want to protect their grandparents and parents by wearing a mask, then they should.

14d.) Do you agree that the restrictions imposed regarding foreign travel are justified?
No

14e.) Do you agree that the quarantine restrictions imposed are justified?
No, it makes the cost of travelling too expensive. If people have been double vaccinated, that should take the worry out of travelling for those that want to.

14f.) Do you believe the testing, tracking and tracing instructions are justified? No

14g.) Are you aware that the covid-19 related death rates and vaccination rates in Africa and very much lower than those in the UK and indeed Europe? Yes. I have often wondered why this is.

14h.) As reports from South Africa about the Omicron variant now state the UK and some other countries have over-reacted to it as a perceived threat, because they maintain it is “mild,” should the NHS be diverting so many costs and resources to a massive mass covid-19 vaccination programme? No

14i) Are you worried that this programme will put back further the recovery of the NHS is dealing with the backlog of millions of appointments and operations, many for life threatening issues? Yes

15) Please write any further comment you may wish to make in general on this subject. We will have to learn to live with Coronavirus in the same way we live with flu. Probably an annual vaccination. If people don’t want to be vaccinated they should have the choice. People like to feel safe and protected and for many people the restrictions provide that.

I think that the measures have probably cost more lives than they’ve saved in terms of untreated illnesses, depression and suicides through lockdown. My apologies that James has not had time to complete the full questionnaire. I spoke to him on the phone yesterday about it and he says:

“I am against lockdowns, mask mandates, vaccine passports and compulsory vaccinations.”

Conclusion:

For those voters for which covid policies are key to their election decision making, some points are abundantly clear:

The four mainstream parties have been backing lockdown type restrictions, so have a track record unreliability on these, as well as the issues of covid-19 vaccines mandates, passports and coercions.

Their candidates had the opportunity to state otherwise and declined to do so.

(The Conservative, Green, Labour and Liberal Democrat Parties)

The same nil response came from three other candidates. It also looks like all the opposition parties will be voting for the new restrictions when Parliament debates them on Wednesday 15^th December.

It is also obvious that five of the parties are in the freedom from lockdowns camp:

The Freedom Alliance , the Heritage, UKIP and the Reclaim and the Reform parties.

These do have some slightly different policies, the answers on which fully completed questionnaires would have resolved!

Ironically, the Monster Raving Loony Party candidate can be added to that list.

On the important question of which candidates have signed the Petition to have a Referendum on abolishing the UK Coronavirus Act, the candidates of the Freedom Alliance party and UKIP have done so. Also, Martin Daubney, the Reclaim Party candidate, has publicly stated that he has signed it.

Also, at the Old Bexley and Sidcup by- election the leader of the Heritage party said he was committed to signing the Petition.

Then there is the alternative of Suzie Akers -Smith, Independent who could be described as a thinking middle of the road covid candidate, if such a term existed !

The situation is not easy for the North Shropshire electors. Bearing in mind the continued scaremongering comments by the Prime Minister, the latest being Sunday 12^th December, it is even more important the electors turn out and vote !

The lesson to be learned from all this, is that there has to be more cooperation, and less election contesting between the parties campaigning for restoration of our freedoms.

It is an untenable and ridiculous situation. There are more than enough Parliamentary, Council and other elected positions to fill in the future, so there is no need for competition. The movement will just have to become a “broad Church,” which other parties manage to achieve !
