Sadiq Khan has said in a radio interview last night that he is set to raise Council Tax to pay for more policing after a man has been found shot dead in the street in north London.
The victim died at the scene in Enfield, after armed Police responded to reports he had suffered a gunshot wound.
Three men have been arrested on suspicion of murder following the man’s death in St Joseph’s Road, at about 22:10 GMT on Tuesday.
A Police cordon remains in place at the scene and is set to be there for an extended period of time.
The death is the 131st homicide in the capital so far this year which means that London now has a higher murder rate than that of New York.
It also means London’s overall homicide rate has now hit its highest level since 2008.
Londoners are heartbroken to hear about the near-daily carnage on our streets, the young lives lost and the misery for families and communities.
The mayor’s new Violence Reduction Unit will need to demonstrate that it brings something different to the table. It cannot simply be a rebranding exercise of existing programmes and policies.
We cannot emphasise enough how critical it is that the unit tackles the traumatic situations that children might live through in order to break the cycle of violence.
We do not underestimate the challenge ahead but it’s time for the mayor to take even further and drastic action because London is crying out for change.
